Operation Bobbi Bear: Amanzimtoti, Durban, South Africa
Each and every day in South Africa, at least 50 children become victims of rape. Jackie Branfield spearheads Operation Bobbi Bear, an organization that works to rescue, represent and reintegrate children in South Africa who have been raped, sexually or physically abused, and to minimize their risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. Bobbi Bear provides a non-threatening way for child victims of sexual abuse to quickly communicate the nature of their abuse and have a chance at bringing their violators to justice. The regional HIV-infection rate stands at 40%, so application of AIDS medications within 72 hours of HIV exposure can be lifesaving. The Bobbi Bear staff provide these children with counseling, therapy, and court assistance, and most importantly, the love and care they need and deserve most. Keep a Child Alive covers Bobbi Bear's administrative costs, so they can facilitate their care most urgently. Bobbi Bear has trained a staff of twelve Child Safety Officers, and continues to lobby for better laws to protect children and provide HIV drugs for child rape victims.
