Agape Child Care Center: Valley of a Thousand Hills, Durban, South Africa
The children of the Agape Child Care Center know hardship. After having lost their parents to AIDS or other issues exacerbated by the disease, they were rescued by founder Zodwa Mqadi. Yet in a devastating matter of months, an electrical fire destroyed the Agape Child Care Center, leaving the children homeless. With the support of Keep a Child Alive and the Simunye Project, a new center was built, including a splendid new hall at its heart where the children now gather to eat, study, relax and sing. The Agape Child Care Center is now home to 50 orphans, aged 1 to 17 years, and embodies the hope and promise for a generation orphaned by AIDS. Our funding of its operational expenses, including food, electricity, and building maintenance, enables Agape to provide the first loving home that many of these most vulnerable children have ever known. Now famous as the subject of the film We Are Together, the Agape children have traveled the world sharing their powerful voices and are proof of the resilience of youth in the face of adversity.
